PANG - THE HIT SQUAD (OCEAN) - £7.95
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The balloons are coming! They are bouncing all over the world and it is
up to you, the fearless Pang to halt the invasion. You must visit 17
countries and burst all the balloons in each before moving on to the
next. You are armed with a harpoon but may collect better weapons as you
go along, but these only last for the country they are collected in
(customs regulations I guess).
Pang, now re-released on budget, takes the form of a single screen
platforms and ladders type affair, with some levels having elaborate
platforms ladders while others having none. Each of the 17 countries has
3 stages, apart from the last which has only 2. You fire your harpoon
wire up and it will disappear if it hits a platform, the top of the
screen or a balloon. Balloons generally start off large and slow moving.
Bursting a large balloon causes it to divide into 2 smaller ones.
Popping the smallest one will make it disappear. The idea is to get rid
of them all.
Other Weapons will sometimes drop down from a burst balloon and will
stay on screen for a short time before disappearing. There are 3 others
available - double harpoon lets you fire two wires at once, power
harpoon will stay on the screen for a few seconds unless a balloon hits
it, and the vulcan missile (gun) just fires a stream of bullets. This is
not helpful where blocks - part of the platforms - need to be destroyed
in order to release balloons. the gun cannot destroy these.
As well as weapons, other bonus items will drop from some balloons. the
clock stops the balloons for a few seconds and you can also walk over
them without being killed. Hourglass slows the balloons down for a while
and the dynamite makes all the balloons split into their smallest size.
In addition to this, several creatures appear on screen from time to
time, that will either help or hinder you. The crab will pop some
balloons if he touches them, but he is pretty dumb and you're lucky if
he gets any. Birds and snails also move about and if they touch you,
they will cause you to not be able to fire temporarily.
Also, some levels, namely Leningrad, Maya and Antartica have ice on the
ground which causes you to slide - sometimes into oncoming balloons!
There is also a time limit - with a bonus for time remaining after
completing the level.
The 2 player option sees both players on the screen at once - this can
either be a help or a hindrance. On some screens it means that you'll
get off twice as quickly, but on the more difficult ones you will
probably be there twice as long as you both lose lives in the ensuing
mass of tiny balloons!
The backdrops are very nicely detailed and colourful and change with
each stage. The graphic remains the same but the colours change to
represent morning, noon and night scenes. There are also some very good
tunes which change with each country. Sprites are detailed and smooth.
When you complete all the levels, you don't go back to the start but you
see a short end sequence (not animated like on the Amiga - why?). But
even when you complete the game, you'll find yourself coming back
because it is such great fun to blast the balloons and collect the
bonus items.
Overall, this is a very good game, especially coming from Ocean, and one
of the best budget titles around.
POINTS FOR : POINTS AGAINST :
* Good graphics and sound * Very little actually!
* Highly addictive
* Simultaneous 2 player game
* Price
